Longfellow Days 2009
LONGFELLOW: CITIZEN OF THE WORLD
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow portrait and signature

Here and abroad, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is best known as a poet.  However, he was also a linguist, an early teacher of modern languages and a distinguished translator from Spanish, French, Italian and the languages of German, Nordic and Icelandic cultures.  Longfellow’s distinctly American verse was fed by foreign travel and cross-cultural immersion.  As he introduced the world to our country’s legends and traditions, he exposed Americans to the literary heritage of Europe.

Sunday, February 1, 1:00 PM - POETS IN THE COMMUNITY - I
Maine poets Ted Bookey, Sheryl Hansen and Ed Gottfried read from their work.  Free.

We set off on “Travels with Henry” and “Travels with Gil”:  noted Longfellow scholar Charles Calhoun discusses Longfellow’s explorations abroad, Michael Gilroy of Frontier follows a path from Mongolia to Maine, and Frontier staff launch a month-long, participatory exhibit of travel photos and writings from the community.  Bring snapshots!  Free.

Saturday, February 7, 11:00 AM SILENT FILM:  A MAN THERE WAS
Based on an epic poem by Ibsen, this movie launched Sweden’s film tradition.  Ibsen and Longfellow were contemporaries, both well-traveled, both concerned with injustices, but with sharply contrasting styles and outlooks.  Live accompaniment, and original musical score, by Doug Protsik.  $8 per ticket.
